Lucian Read - Honorable Mention
Lucian Read, a New York–based freelance photographer, has been on assignment in Iraq, Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and the Balkans, among others.
Lucian culled through tens of thousands of images he made during four years of covering the Iraq War. His photographs of the Marines fighting on the frontlines include some of the signature moments of the war: The Battles of Najaf and Fallujah, the rise of the Sunni Awakening, and The Surge, among others.
In essence, Read's photographs capture the complete Marine tour between May 2004 and February 2005—"a photographic document produced by no other photographer in this war."
An extensive selection of Read's photographs of U.S. Marines in Iraq hangs on the walls of the National History of the Marine Corps Museum, Quantico, Virginia.
His work has been published in Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Newsweek, Time, U.S. News & World Report, Paris Match, Stern, the New York Times, and American Photo. Read is represented by the RapportPress photo agency in New York.
